The musical foundations of Miney Moe (originally named Oubliette) were laid in 2001 in Melbourne by composer/guitarist Liam O'Connell, who had just moved to the cultural capital to get an Arts degree. In between reading Jane Austin, The Sonnets, learning Spanish and befriending some tough young philosopher women, Liam wrote songs on his down-tuned 12 string guitar and dreamed about playing gigs on the proto-scene that was early 2000s Northcote.
A desolate place to be a stranger, he attended open mic nights and drank beer with new friends who described him as angst-ridden and too old for his 22 years.
Finally plucking up the courage to record some demos on an old dictating machine, demons were revealed on mixtapes for true friends whose encouragement was pivotal.
Casually a band with Uni friends began with fellow estudiantes Nicky and Roberto who had such liquid feel, it was beautiful. They booked rehearsals and got gigs at 303, the Old Bar and Ruckers [now The Wesley Anne]. The reception was lukewarm, as the frontman's unconfident singing clearly didn't live up to the level of guitar skill.
Taking up cigarettes seemed like a good idea at the time, but clearly proved otherwise and it was thrown away soon afterwards. The writing felt good and by late 2001, a solid 5 songs would go on to make it on to The Outsider; these blended folk guitar style with rudimentary jazz harmony and Hendrix-inspired licks. Heartbreak was the primary muse. The rest came years later and under a new name, Miney Moe turning towards electronic production. In a new home and with much perspective.
A whole lifetime rests in between these eras, and is destined for the next disc.
